There are organizations that try to help people who want to recover from drug addiction. An example of these organizations is Narcotics Anonymous; a nonprofit group. It goes after a twelve step program and it is group-oriented. It describes itself as a society of men and women for whom drugs had become a disturbing problem.

In Narcotics Anonymous, the only requirement is a desire to stop using drugs. Moreover, since it is group-oriented, each member tries to help each other. They meet regularly to lend a hand to each other stay clean, clean meaning a complete abstinence form all mood and mind altering substances. A non-profit organization, thus no fees are required to become a member.

Narcotics Anonymous provides a place for drug addicts to recover aside from rehabilitation centers. Normally, addicts initially enter narcotics anonymous after reaching a “bottom” in their life, a point at which life feels completely uncontrollable, characterized by “unemployability, dereliction and destruction” and centered around the getting and using and finding ways and means to get more drugs. There are different bottoms for every Narcotics Anonymous member. This is when an addict can be anywhere he chooses to stop using substances. In practice, it is drug use and the extreme consequences related with its abuse that bring most addicts to their bottom many of them sliding along ‘this bottom’ for many years often cannot find their way out.

Regular meetings are the basic unit of Narcotics Anonymous fellowship. Gatherings are held in a array of places such as church meeting rooms, libraries, hospitals, community centers, parks, or any other place that can accommodate a meeting. “Open” and “closed” meetings are the two basic types of meetings practiced in Narcotics Anonymous.Anyone is welcome to attend an open meeting, while closed meetings are limited to addicts and to people who think they may have a problem with drugs.

Meeting formats differ, but most of the time it conatin time devoted to the reading aloud of Narcotics Anonymous literature regarding the matters implicated in living life clean which is written by and for members of Narcotics Anonymous. Many meetings also include an “open sharing” part, where anyone attending has the chance to share. There is normally no direct reaction on the duration of the ’share’, thus only one person ever speaks at any given time during this portion of the meeting.

The basic purpose of every group is to transfer the information on the person suffering from addiction. As a result, the newcomer is considered to be the most important person in any meeting. Hope is the essential message of Narcotics Anonymous. The basic guarantee of narcotics anonymous is that an addict, any addict, can stop using drugs, drop the desire to use, and discover a new way of life. Members are being given hope for a new life through Narcotics Anonymous’ twelve step program and twelve traditions.

Life should not be put to waste because a man has much potential. He or she may fail, as in becoming enslaved by worldly things such as drugs, but an individual is also capable of standing up from the fall and looking forward once again. Thus, the Narcotics Anonymous, focusing on people who are victims of drug addiction, speaks to these people of how wonderful life still is and that addiction does not mean the end, it is just a middle stage for a new and better life.

Narcotics Anonymous are now based in different areas in the world. The organization is trying to make a difference. These organizations have but one message to get across, that in times of darkness, such as falling into the pit of drug addiction, you are not alone in this battle. The Narcotics Anonymous is there to support you and help you stand up and fight for your life.

Heroin is a highly addictive drug derived from morphine, which is obtained from the opium poppy. It is a “downer” that affects the brain’s pleasure systems andinterferes with the brain’s ability to perceive pain. Thus, it is used as pain killer or as a recreational drug. Moreover, it has an extremely high potential for abuse.

Depending upon the preference of the user and the drugs’ purity. Heroin can be used in different ways. Heroin can be injected into a vein, injected into a muscle, smoked in a standard pipe, mixed in a marijuana joint, inhaled as smoke through a straw, known as “chasing the dragon,” snorted as powder via the nose.

After a single dose, the short-term effects of abusing heroin appears and in a few hours disappear. After an injection of heroin, the user reports feeling a surge of euphoria accompanied by a warm flushing of the skin, a dry mouth, and heavy extremities. The initial euphoria is followed by an alternation of a wakeful and sleepy state. Mental functioning becomes clouded because of the depression of the central nervous system. Other effects included slowed and slurred speech, slow gait, constricted pupils, droopy eyelids, impaired night vision, vomiting, constipation.

Long-term effects of heroin appear after repeated use for some period of time. Chronic users may develop collapsed veins, infection of the heart lining and valves, abscesses, cellulites, and liver disease. Pulmonary complications, including different types of pneumonia, may result from the poor health condition of the abuser, as well as from heroin’s depressing effects on respiration. In addition to the effects of the drug itself, street heroin may have additives that do not really dissolve and result in clogging the blood vessels that lead to the lungs, liver, kidneys, or brain. This can cause infection or even death of small patches of cells in vital organs. With regular heroin use, tolerance develops. This means the abuser must use more heroin to achieve the same intensity or effect.

As higher doses are used over time, physical dependence and addiction develop. With physical dependence, the body has adapted to the presence of the drug and withdrawal symptoms may happen if use is reduced. Withdrawal, which in regular abusers may occur as early as a few hours after the last administration, produces drug craving, restlessness, muscle and bone pain, insomnia, diarrhea and vomiting, cold flashes with goose bumps (”cold turkey”), kicking movements (”kicking the habit”), and other symptoms. Major withdrawal symptoms hit the highest point between 48 and 72 hours after the last does and drop after about a week. Sudden withdrawal by heavily dependent users who are in poor health can be fatal.

Moreover, the withdrawal syndrome from heroin may start within 6 to 24 hours of discontinuation of the drug; however, this time frame can vary with the degree of tolerance as well as the amount of the last consumed dose. Symptoms may include: sweating, malaise, anxiety, depression, priapism, extra sensitivity of the genitals in females, general feeling of heaviness, cramp-like pains in the limbs, excessive yawning, tears, rhinorrhea, sleep difficulties (insomnia), cold sweats, chills, severe muscle and bone aches; nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, cramps, and fever.

Like any other cycle of drug addiction, heroin addiction starts with the irregular use of the drug that would then lead to a habit. This is so because it causes some chemicals in the brain to become dependent to the drug. Moreover, the body itself desires for the drug because of its pleasurable effects. It is relaxing, thus the person feels positively about the drug. And even though it gets to the point that the drug is starting to deteriorate the person, he or she could not get away with it anymore, because he or she has become dependent on heroin. Thus, when the drug intake is suddenly ended, the person experiences withdrawal symptoms. With this, professional help is needed for recovery.
